Here we have a lovely large palette knife by George Wostenholm & Son of Sheffield England. The handle is wooden (Lignum) and although there is a crack in the handle on both sides, it is holding firm.
The name stamped is still legible and they were very famous for their cutlery (including Bowie knives in the 1850s) particularly the ones marked “I XL” like this example! George was fascinated by America and much of his extensive trade was with them. Although they were known to make palette knives, it’s really quite rare to find one.
In my opinion, it dates from the 1800s but its hard to be exactly accurate. George Wostenholm (the third) was granted the I XL trademark in 1831 and died in 1876 so this would be a rare early palette knife from a world famous maker.
